San Diego had a chance to steal one against Pittsburgh, but David Bednar made Taylor Kohlwey and Trent Grisham walk the plank. After loading the bases with one out and walking Juan Soto to give up a run, Bednar got rookie Kohlwey to foul out and struck out Grisham.
The Padres are now six games below .500, but reports continue to suggest they are not interested in trading any of their upcoming free agents, namely starting pitcher Blake Snell and reliever Josh Hader.
Despite the trade deadline now just five short days away, the Padres' players — or at least Fernando Tatis Jr. — are blocking out the noise. With San Diego now 6.5 games behind in the NL Wild Card, they have some serious climbing to do if they want to save themselves from embarrassment.
